Cairo Business Receives Community Beautification Award

The Community Beautification Awards were created in 1973. This award is presented annually by the Hall County Regional Planning Commission to a business that has made special efforts to beautify the area where they operate.  Awards are presented to one business in the city of Grand Island and one from rural Hall County including the City of Wood River and the Villages of Alda, Cairo and Doniphan. Government or other tax supported entities are not eligible for the award but may be recognized for their efforts.

Jaime Rathman nominated the Village of Cairo and The Medina Street Vault for this award. On Wednesday, October 2nd, representatives from the Village Board and the Cairo Community Foundation Board attended the awards.

Jenna Schweitzer from the Medina Street Vault won the community beautification award for Hall County. This award was presented by Chad Nabity. While Cairo is not eligible to receive an award the planning commission commended Cairo its visually pleasing downtown area. Much of that beauty is attributed to our landscaping. Jane and Denny Reimers keep our flowerbeds vibrant and healthy. Their skills play an enormous role in keeping our downtown beautiful.

Short Time Compensation Programs Offered For Business with Seasonal Unemployment Challenges

As Nebraska Economic Development Office hears of significant slowdown in several industries across the state, and  know what our workforce challenges are,  there is a program through the Department of Labor available to businesses to help avoid layoffs and potential permanent loss of their workforce.  It’s called the STC (Short-Time Compensation) program.  In a nutshell, a business would go with reduced work hours across the board, and STC funding would provide partial unemployment benefits for up to a year as an alternative to lay-offs during down times.

The contact for this program would be Katie Thurber.  If an employer is interested in the program, she is the frontline contact for getting a plan submitted and approved.   Katie.Thurber@nebraska.gov
