There were 46 teams ranging from grades fourth through eighth with boys playing on Saturday and girls playing on Sunday. The Centura High School girls and boys basketball teams volunteered their time by running the game clock, keeping score, working concession stands, and taking gate money. The Centura elementary and junior high teams did a great job, with 6th grade girls and 7th grade boys getting runner up and 4th, 6th, and 8th grade boys winning their championship game. Sandra Krolikowski, a member of Centura’s Booster Club had this to say about the tournament, “The tournament was a very successful fundraiser for the Centura Boosters.  In turn, the funds raised will be used to help benefit the Centura students and student related programs.” They plan on organizing another youth tournament next year.Basketball

Centura High School Student Council Pizza Night

Centura students Paige Reimers and Jane Zimmerman attended the District 3 Nebraska Student Council Convention with Mrs. Carpenter, Student Council Advisor, on Thursday, February 12, 2015, at Grand Island Senior High. They attended mini-sessions, listened to guest speakers, and did activities with other students. Thirteen schools with 205 students and advisors attended the convention.

Later that day, the Centura Student Council met for a pizza party, sponsored by the Teens in the Driver Seat Program, for their efforts in promoting seatbelt usage. The student council recently presented a program on Driver Distractions during student prep, and displayed signs throughout the building on texting while driving. They also conducted a field observation of students driving while texting, listening to music, or talking on their phone leaving the parking lot at school. Surprisingly the results were 19% of the students used an electronic device while driving, and 81% did not.Screen Shot 2015-02-17 at 9.19.46 AM

While at NTV the students went on a tour of the studio and even got to go into the live studio and watch the end of “The Good Life” program. At UNK the students toured the communications building and got an idea of how the journalism department is run. The students got a chance to see how the UNK newspaper also known as The Antelope is put together and edited. One other thing the students got to experience was the UNK radio station 91.1. Some students even got to participate in the radio broadcast. It was a very fun and educational day.
