The Cairo community and the surrounding area turned out very well for the Annual Cairo Rural Volunteer Fire Department Smorgasbord on Saturday evening, March 18th.
Roast beef, ham, au gratin potatoes, baked beans, and various homemade salads were provided. Over 500 meals were served.
The weather cooperated and made travel easy for all the neighbors and friends. People found it easy to lounge after dinner for that one extra cup of coffee.
The Department members did the food preparation and serving. The Local Boy Scout Troop #103 worked hard at the clean-up of the dishes.
During the evening several awards were given and Members were recognized. Chief Steve Oseka was noted for his hard work as Nebraska Fire Instructor of the Year—an award given to him by a vote of his peers statewide.
Damon Obermiller was given a plaque celebrating twelve years of service to the Department. Damon has moved out of the Fire District. His contributions will be sorely missed. We all wish him well.
Wade Osburn was recognized for contributing 30 years of service to our group. Wade is a consistent, knowledgeable veteran of the Department and we salute him.
Francis Johnson (Fran) was presented with a lawn ornamental—an engraved stone—for his 40 years of service to the Department. Still going strong, Fran is the treasurer for the group and provides steady leadership to our Department.
The ornamental stone came from Ed Beckler’s Boulder and Rocks of Cairo.
A great deal of good will was enjoyed! One attendee summed it up when he said, “This dinner is an event that the whole community always looks forward to. Spring is here.”
Many thanks to all who continue to support the Cairo Rural Volunteer Fire Department! It is deeply appreciated!
