Verne Hickok to be Grand Marshall of CornStalk Parade

The 2012 CornStalk Parade is fast approaching, start building your parade float!  This year’s theme is “Cairo…Little Town, Big Dreams”.  The parade Grand Marshal will be Verne Hickok. Verne was nominated as the Grand Marshal because of his positive outlook of the Cairo Community and he represents the theme of this year’s festival  very well.  Vern lived the majority of his life in Atkinson, Nebraska.  He worked as the postmaster for several years and retired in 1990, he moved to Cairo in 2006.  You can often find him helping out at Aces and Eights in Cairo.  Verne’s family includes his son David from Twin Falls ID, his daughter Shana from Cairo, and son and daughter in-law Donn and Vikki Hickok from Cairo along with their 4 children Emily, Jacob, Paige and Maddy. Verne served in the Army from 1953-1955.  He is a member of the American Legion, Our Savior’s Lutheran Church in Dannebrog, and Rail Road Historical Society. Verne enjoys riding his bike, volunteering, watching sports and participating and reporting on local events.  Verne enjoys the people of Cairo and appreciates the small town flare the town offers.  He believes we have an outstanding school system and takes pride in all the positives that this community has. Verne will get the honor of selecting the outstanding parade float at the festival.  Anyone can participate in the parade.  Parade entries will be judged on the following categories: Best of Theme, Mayor’s Choice, and Grand Marshall’s Choice.  Again this year due to generous donations prize money will be awarded to those categories.

Parade check in will begin at 9:00 am on the northwest corner of the Community Center.  The parade will kick off at 10am on Main Street.

Preregistering for the parade is appreciated but not required.  Parade applications can be picked up at City Hall, the City website cairocommunity.com  or contact Jaci Knuth at 308-384-1416.
