Progressive Agriculture Safety Day Remember – June 4th!

Cairo is celebrating five years of Agriculture Safety Day. Be sure to bring your K thru 6th grader to Safety Day on June 4th. Registration starts at 7:30 am. The day ends at 2 pm. Each child receives a t-shirt, lunch, snack and take home goodie bag.

Children get to participate in safety teaching activities focused on these topics: weather, auger, tractor roll over, knife, school bus, semi, stress management, hypothermia, neck and technology hazards, hunting and gun, road and flat tire, food, vaping and juuling.

The Cairo Community Foundation operates a fund to provide financial support for Progressive Agriculture Safety Day.

Several businesses donate time and funding to make Safety Day a fun, hands-on, learning adventure.

Progressive Agriculture Safety Day – June 5th

Progressive Agriculture Safety is this week, on June 5th.

This event is made possible with a grant from Cargill and financial support from Farm Credit Services.

Pathway Bank is our gift sponsor.  Each child will receive a flashlight provided by Pathway Bank.

Funds are managed by the Cairo Community Foundation.

Registration is from 8:00-8:30 am.  You not need to be pre-registered to attend.

Register Your Child for Progressive Agriculture Safety Day on June 6th

Registrations are now open for Progressive Agriculture Safety Day on June 6th.

The event is held from 8 am to 2 pm at the Cairo Community Center.

If you live within a 30 mile radius of Cairo your children are eligible to attend this event.

This years featured topics include:  ATV Safety, PTO Safety, Sun Safety, Sugar in Your Drink, Operation Lifesaver, Water Safety, Weather Safety, Hearing Safety, Chemical Safety and Home Alone.

Cost is $5 per student.

Each student registered before May 10th will receive a free life jacket.

Registrations received after May 10th may not receive a life jacket.

Each child must complete a separate registration forms.

Completed forms and payment may be returned to the Village of Cairo Office.

Progressive Agriculture Safety Day Served 109 Children This Year

20160607_084557(0)~2The Village of Cairo hosted its second Progressive Agriculture Safety Day on June 7, 2016. 109 students from area communities, over thirty volunteers, and Moses the comfort dog attended the event.

Students participated in hands-on learning activities. Safety topics included how to keep safe near operating power take offs (PTOs), mowing the lawn, and riding all-terrain vehicles (ATV’s). Students rotated through sessions on grain bin safety, gun safety, and weather safety, as well as how to build and use basic first aid kits. The Cairo and Grand Island Rural Fire Departments educated children on how to react during a fire with demonstrations in the smoke house, correct operation of a fire extinguisher, and the stop-drop and roll technique. The day also included a tour of the Boelus Ambulance. Each registered child that attended, received a free t-shirt provided by Progressive Agriculture Foundation, a goodie bag filled with items provided by local sponsors, and a fire extinguisher was given to each registered family.

Many local businesses provided support vital to the success of the 2016 Progressive Agriculture Safety Day. Special thanks to: Titan Machinery, Green Line Equipment, Hall County Sheriff, Howard County Sheriff, Central Nebraska Health District, Stretch Powersports, National Weather Service, Cairo and Grand Island Rural Fire Departments, Boelus Ambulance/EMT’s, Cargill, Pathway Bank and Insurance, Global Industries, Hornady, Farm Credit Services of America, and Central Nebraska Health Services. In addition to the businesses listed, additional community volunteers included: members of Centura FFA, Northwest FFA, Wood River FFA, Reggie Schmit, and the Village of Cairo.

The feedback received from sponsors, volunteers, students, and parents has been very positive. Planning for the 2017 Safety Day is in full swing by co-coordinators Charity Adams, Tara Janda and Sarah Quandt. The date for next year’s event is June 6, 2017. Coordinators are seeking additional co-coordinators from Wood River and Shelton to join the planning team, if interested please contact Charity, Tara or Sarah. Coordinators plan to feature water safety for Safety Day 2017 and hope to have the resources to provide each registered child with a life jacket.

Farm Credit Services Donates Funds to 2016 Progressive Agriculture Safety Day

farm safety day logoFarm Credit Services of America (FCSAmerica) has made a donation to the Village of Cairo for the support of 2016 Progressive Agriculture Safety Day.

Village of Cairo received approval from Progressive Agriculture Foundation to plan Progressive Agriculture Safety Day 2016 after the successful completion of the event in 2015. Nearly 100 children and 30 volunteers attended the event in 2015. Using the guidelines provided by Progressive Agriculture Foundation children were provided education on the importance of food safety, PTO safety, water safety, bicycle safety, animal safety, germ safety, and many more topics. The event is being planned for summer 2016 at the Cairo Community Center. Area youth ages kindergarten through sixth grade are invited to attend this event. Plans for Progressive Agriculture Safety Day 2016 are in process. With the funds provided by Farm Credit Services the event will have the capacity to impact even more children. The funding will also be useful in constructing more interesting educational tools and programs.

Progressive Ag Safety DayThe Village of Cairo hosted its first Progressive Agriculture Safety Day on July 30th, 2015.  Ninety-four students and over thirty volunteers attended this event.

Topics demonstrated this year included Power Take Off Safety, Blind Spot Safety, Animal Safety, Bicycle Safety, Water Safety, Hand Washing, Mosquito Safety, Vehicle Roll Over Safety, and Power Line Safety.  Each registered child in attendance received a free t-shirt provided by Progressive Agriculture Foundation, a  bicycle helmet from CHI Health-St. Francis, and a goodie bag from our sponsors.

Businesses including Titan Machinery, Green Line, Nebraska State Patrol, Hall County Sheriff, Central Nebraska Health District, CHI Health-St. Francis, and Schultz Show Cattle volunteered equipment and employees as educators.  Special thanks to our presenters Alex Stocker and Tonya Anderson for volunteering to educate students as well.
